Short version, for a programme sheet
Tania Pimenova is a flutist in Switzerland. She came out of a classical training and then left the straight path for everything else: pop, dance and film music played live, and the classical repertoire when an evening wants it. She plays events and concerts, teaches, and streams most evenings to an audience that found her on TikTok.

Biography
Tania Pimenova is a flutist based in Switzerland. Born in St Petersburg, she began her training in 1993 and from her fourth school year attended the special music school of the St Petersburg Conservatory, the eleven-year school for gifted children whose upper years count as college level. She graduated from it with distinction and continued at the Conservatory itself.
She went on to the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste, where she completed three master’s degrees in the class of Maria Goldschmidt-Pahn, with Pamela Stahel for piccolo and Günter Wehinger for jazz flute: Music Performance and Music Pedagogy, both with distinction, and Specialized Music Performance, which she concluded as soloist with the Musikkollegium Winterthur. She also worked in masterclasses with Michel Debost, Davide Formisano and José-Daniel Castellon.
She has played with the Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz, the Musikkollegium Winterthur, the Sinfonisches Orchester Zürich, the Symphonieorchester Vorarlberg, the Kammerphilharmonie Graubünden, the Badische Philharmonie Pforzheim and the Camerata Zürich, and at the Opernhaus Zürich with its orchestra and La Scintilla. At the Salzburger Festspiele she played in the stage band of Bellini’s Norma with Cecilia Bartoli under Giovanni Antonini, and she has played at the Bregenzer Festspiele. As a student she led the flutes of the ZHdK orchestra in projects with Sir Simon Rattle and David Zinman.
As a soloist she has performed the Françaix concerto with the Musikkollegium Winterthur, Mozart’s Concerto for Flute and Harp with the Klangforum Schweiz and with the St Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra, and concertos by Jolivet, C. P. E. Bach and Mercadante. Her prizes include the Rahn Kulturfonds Zürich, the Fondation Nicati-de Luze Lausanne, the Kiefer-Hablitzel Stiftung Bern and a Grand Prix at the international competition for young soloists in Jyväskylä.
Her album Celebration was released in 2016, and she played Reed 1 on the international tour of Wicked when it came to Zürich. About ten years ago she began moving away from the classical track towards crossover, and then stopped sorting music by genre at all. Any style is welcome, and it gets the same technique as the classical repertoire: from Lady Gaga to Rammstein and Depeche Mode. She works mainly as a solo act, playing live to instrumental playback, and has built an audience online alongside it. She is currently among the Swiss instrumentalists with the largest followings on TikTok. She lives in the Thurgau.
